AHMEDABAD: The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) held a rally at the office of the Division Railway Manager in Ahmedabad and have threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if their demands were not met.

M Raghaviah, the general secretary of the NFIR, and J.G.Mahurkar, the general secretary of the Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh, said that the Union government has reduced the HRA percentage causing several hardships to the employees. The two said that the liberalized pension scheme introduced by the government social security was abolished and a new pension scheme has been brought in force from January 2004.

NRIF and WRMS demand that the new pension scheme for railway employees who perform their duties at the remote station be withdrawn.

The two said that despite assurance from the government, the demands of the employees have not been fulfilled.

Also, Mahurkar said that over two lakh employees are working for over 12 hours in a day. Despite recommendation from the high-power committee, their duty hours have not been brought down to eight hours per day. The unions have given ultimatum to the government to consider their demand or else they would be forced to launch a stir across the country.
